How To Wear Kilts
Wearing a kilt, whether its a cheap kilt or expensive one, for the first time can be an exhilarating experience. Kilts are worn for special events, weddings, and funerals. Kilts that are sewn and draped are known a "great kilts”. They were originally worn by the poor and also served as a blanket. Kilts that are sewn with pleats, the modern kilt, called the Feileadh Beag, or little kilt, was originally a military design.
Always wear something under the Kilt. Do not go completely bare there. Use a pin or special tie to ensure that the kilt will stay closed. Research now shows that some Scottish men have worn something akin to boxer shorts.
A sewn kilt, is donned thus: put on a shirt (A plain white shirt works with a kilt, if you cannot find a Culloden shirt.), put on the kilt with the two aprons in the front, close the kilt by taking the right side apron first through a hole on the left buckle and fasten it there. Do the same for the left apron. The fringed side of the kilt and pin will be on the right.

Keep things even. If you have used other than the first hole for the straps, remember to continue to use the same variation with each strap. Make certain that your kilt length is to the middle of the knee. The kilt should fit on the natural waist. Pleats are at the back of the kilt. Strap the sporran below waist. The strap will fasten at the back.
Wear the kilt hose folded down below the knee. The garter flashes (ribbons) on the outside of the leg will cover the Sporran strap with the fold. If you are wearing a cummerbund, then you will not wear a belt. A belt can be worn on or over belt loops. It is necessary to make sure that your centre is aligned, the buttons on the shirt to the belt buckle and the centre of the apron.
Next put on the sgian dubh (dirk/weapon) is slid into the sock on your dominant side, for easy access. Put on your tie, tying it shorter than usual; remember that a kilt has a high waist. Lastly, add a jacket or bonnet.
A draped kilt is known a “great kilt”. That part of the kilt which covers the upper body can be folded over one shoulder or over both shoulders, at which time is serves as a cloak.
Pipe and Drum bands are common in American support organizations such as fire-fighter bands. The haunting sound of bagpipe music is not complete without the vision of a man in a kilt.
